Academics and Human Rights Advocates
Urge Clinton to Do the Right Thing

In an open letter, the Human Rights Watch Academic Freedom Committee has called upon President Bill Clinton to champion intellectual and political freedom and to draw attention to the cases of imprisoned scholars in public addresses that he is scheduled to give at Tiananmen Square and Beijing University later this month. Ngawang Choephel, sentenced to 18 years in prison on charges of "espionage" as a result of his ethnomusicological research, is among the many scholars that the HRWAFC lists as being currently imprisoned in the People's Republic of China.
