UPDATE

Sanders Announces Letter to Albright and
Initiation of House Concurrent Resolution 44

Vermont Representative Bernie Sanders has announced that a nonpartisan group comprised of 44 members of Congress has sent a "strongly-worded" letter to Secretary of State Madeleine Albright that calls on Washington to support a resolution at the UN Human Rights Commission, which is currently meeting in Geneva. The resolution condemns China's human rights violations. The letter also urges Albright to work to secure Ngawang's release. (See Update of 17 January 1997 for the full text.)

Congressman Sanders, an independent, also announced that he, together with Republican Representative Ben Gilman of New York and Democratic Representative Nancy Pelosi of California, has introduced legislation in the House which also urges US support for a China resolution at the UN commission and condemns Cheophel's imprisonment. House Concurrent Resolution 44 parallels the resolution passed today by the Senate.
