Musicians Campaign to Free Ngawang

The Free Tibet Campaign UK, in conjunction with Michael Kamen and Annie Lennox, urges that "Musicians of the world unite!" in a petition campaign to free Ngawang Choephel.

Tibetan singer and musician Yungchen Lhamo stated:

Tibetan musicians must be allowed to travel and work freely in Tibet - this should be a basic right in our own country. The world community should understand the dangers some Tibetan musicians face.

On behalf of the campaign, Lulu Navarro wrote:

Music is the international language. The music and culture of Tibet is an important legacy for the whole world. We urge you to sign this petition to show that the repression and persecution of musicans in Tibet will not be tolerated.

UPDATE 11 July 1997:
In response to an e-mail query, Lulu Navarro reports:

[T]he campaign is still very, very active and we are planning something (tentatively) for the 16 of September, the anniversary of Ngawang's arrest. To date, Annie Lennox, Sting, Peter Gabriel, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Brian Ferry, INXS and David Bowie have signed plus many, many others, and musicians in South Africa, Australia, Austria, and France have also given their support. This is an international petition so we welcome as many musicians as possible from whichever musical background and country.

Note: The Musicians' Petition Campaign to free Ngawang ended on 16 September 1997. The Free Tibet Campaign has made available a copy of the petition and its signatories.
